Unleashing the Beast: Audi RS e-tron GT's 921-HP Powerhouse Redefines Electric Performance
Months after the updated Porsche Taycan debuted, Audi has upped the ante with its sister car, the e-tron GT. Packing a jaw-dropping 921 horsepower, the RS e-tron GT takes the throne as the most powerful Audi ever. Alongside its mind-blowing performance, the updated e-tron GT flaunts refreshed styling, enhanced interiors, and a sophisticated suspension system, ensuring it looks as sharp as it handles.
Enhanced Electric Drivetrains
Under the sleek hood of the S e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT lie permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PSM) on the front axle, delivering 235 horsepower. While the GT variant enjoys new power electronics with an updated pulse inverter, the rear boasts another PSM pushing around 556 hp. The S e-tron GT musters a commendable 670 hp, but the RS e-tron GT launches into supercar territory with a staggering 921 hp, setting a new benchmark for Audi's performance vehicles.
Even the baseline models don't disappoint in speed. The S e-tron GT sprints to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds, while the RS model shaves that time down by 0.6 seconds. Labeled the RS e-tron GT Performance, this powerhouse needs a mere 2.5 seconds to hit the same mark, underscoring its supercar prowess.
Suspenseful Suspension
Not just about raw power, the RS e-tron GT features an advanced suspension system that promises exceptional ride quality and handling. The new air suspension system employs two-chamber technology, ironing out bumps and enhancing cornering dynamics. Additionally, the active suspension system, available as an optional extra, adapts vehicle characteristics through the drive select dynamic handling system. This system offers three profiles: Comfort, Dynamic, and Efficiency, while the S variant includes an additional configurable mode, and RS models come with RS1 and RS2 modes, plus a special performance mode.
Boost and Brakes
The RS models incorporate a boost function, adding a crucial 94 hp for a 10-second power surge. Improved stopping power complements this acceleration, with standard steel discs for the S e-tron GT and tungsten carbide-coated discs for the RS, available as an option across the range. Carbon fiber ceramic discs are also on offer, ensuring the RS e-tron GT can decelerate as impressively as it accelerates. Weight reduction has been a focus, with the rear electric motor shedding 22.04 lbs, and the driveshaft strengthened to facilitate smoother power delivery.
Mightier Battery and Rapid Charging
The RS e-tron GT's 97 kWh (net) battery is not only lighter by 19.8 lbs but also charges faster. With an upgraded cooling system and a new two-layer cooling plate, the maximum charging power now hits 320 kW. This enables the e-tron GT to recharge from 10 to 80% in a swift 18 minutes, providing a quick 174-mile range boost in just 10 minutes. Audi claims a maximum range of 378 miles based on the WLTP cycle, though real-world use may vary.
Revamped Styling
The e-tron GT's aesthetics have received subtle yet significant updates. A body-colored strip now adorns the Singleframe grille, alongside revised air curtains and a more pronounced rear diffuser. The RS models feature a unique 3D honeycomb structure and several exclusive styling elements. Available options include a matte carbon fiber roof and other carbon accents. New 20-inch wheels debut for the S e-tron GT, with the RS models boasting two fresh 21-inch designs, including a nostalgic nod to the '90s Avus concept.
Luxurious and Sustainable Interior
Inside, Audi has combined luxury with sustainability. The redesigned steering wheel, new seats, and updated digital content elevate the cabin's ambiance. Unique trim options like matte carbon camouflage inlays and the introduction of vanadium bring a modern touch. Sustainable materials such as recycled polyester Dinamica microfiber and Econyl nylon fiber enhance the eco-friendly credentials, while a panoramic sunroof with polymer-dispersed liquid crystal technology offers a dynamic visual experience. The advanced Audi virtual cockpit now includes comprehensive battery information and RS-specific content, with performance models featuring a configurable speedometer that honors the iconic Audi RS 2 Avant.
Pricing and Availability
Expected to reach U.S. shores later this year, the Audi RS e-tron GT is priced competitively in Europe: €126,000 ($135,000) for the S e-tron GT, €147,500 ($158,000) for the RS e-tron GT, and €160,500 ($172,000) for the RS e-tron GT Performance. With its blend of blistering speed, advanced technology, and sustainable luxury, the RS e-tron GT is set to redefine electric performance and automotive excellence.
