Lewis Hamilton Opens Up: The Emotional Toll of His 2021 F1 Heartbreak and Triumphant Return

Lewis Hamilton has admitted that the tumultuous end to his 2021 Formula 1 campaign left deep scars that took a long time to heal. The seven-time world champion was on the brink of an unprecedented eighth title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but a controversial decision by then-FIA race director Michael Masi altered the course of F1 history.
In the closing laps, Hamilton held a comfortable lead over his rival Max Verstappen. However, a contentious call during a late Safety Car period allowed Verstappen, on fresh Soft tyres, to pass Hamilton on the final lap and snatch the title. This outcome not only deprived Hamilton of a record eighth championship but also marked the beginning of Verstappen’s dominant streak in the seasons that followed.
The defeat in Abu Dhabi was particularly crushing for Hamilton, who saw his aspirations and hard work crumble in a moment. The following seasons didn’t provide much solace, with Mercedes struggling under new ground effect regulations and Hamilton enduring winless campaigns.
Silverstone Triumph: The First Step Toward Closure
It wasn’t until the British Grand Prix at Silverstone that Hamilton’s fortunes turned around. The race saw Mercedes exhibit renewed competitiveness, allowing Hamilton to secure his 104th career victory and his first in a prolonged period.
When asked if this victory at Silverstone was the final piece in moving past the 2021 heartbreak, Hamilton reflected on the arduous journey he’s been through. “I thought I was over it,” he admits, “but coming into 2022 made me realize that the wounds were still fresh.”
Hamilton is philosophical about his journey, explaining that healing isn’t instantaneous, and finding inner peace has been a daily endeavor. He is determined to continue making the right decisions in his life, from professional commitments to personal well-being. “I’m not giving up. I’m making the right decisions with my life, how I prepare, and how I manage my time,” he adds.
A Future with Ferrari
As Hamilton looks ahead, his transition to Ferrari looms large. The decision is significant, especially as Mercedes appears to be solving the issues that plagued their performance in recent years. Despite Ferrari's recent downturn, Hamilton remains optimistic about his future with the Italian team.
“The commitment I still have to this team and the love that I still have for my job is immense,” Hamilton states. He acknowledges that being part of Formula 1, amongst the top 20 drivers in the world, is a unique and gratifying experience.
Interestingly, Hamilton doesn’t view the contrasting fortunes of Mercedes and Ferrari as a bittersweet narrative. “When we started the season, we weren’t anywhere near Red Bull. It felt like we might never get a win,” says Hamilton. Yet, the collective effort from his Mercedes team has transformed the car's performance, leading to a much-needed uplift.
Hamilton’s aim is to leave Mercedes on a high note, not on a low as initially feared. “So we’re not leaving on a low but leaving on a high has been our goal,” he explains. While Mercedes is not yet the fastest car on the grid, Hamilton is hopeful that future upgrades will boost their competitive edge, enabling them to fight for front-row positions more consistently.
As Hamilton prepares for the next chapter of his racing career with Ferrari, his journey offers a profound lesson in resilience, dedication, and the relentless pursuit of greatness. Though the 2021 season left an indelible mark, Hamilton’s recent success and unwavering commitment suggest that his story is far from over.
