Move Over Tesla: Jeep's Game-Changing All-Electric Wagoneer S is Here
Get ready to embrace a new era of electrification as Jeep launches its first global EV, the Wagoneer S, poised to go head-to-head with Tesla and revolutionize the rugged SUV market. With ambitions to attract not just Tesla enthusiasts but a broad spectrum of drivers, Jeep is doubling down on its commitment to innovation and performance.
Meet the All-Electric Wagoneer S
Jeep has ventured beyond its European all-electric Avenger model to unveil the Wagoneer S, a luxury EV designed for a global market. Unveiled last week, this model is set to redefine the Jeep brand, carrying CEO Antonio Filosa’s words, “marks a new chapter in the storied history of Jeep brand.” The Wagoneer S is unmistakably Jeep with its classic design elements refined for the electric age.
One of the eye-catching updates is the iconic seven-slot grille, now closed and adorned with ambient cast lighting, making it a visually stunning centerpiece. Built on the STLA Large platform, the Wagoneer S promises an impressive 300-plus miles of range. Boasting 600 hp and 617 lb-ft of torque, this electric SUV leaps from 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 3.4 seconds.
While it shares a platform with the Dodge Charger, Jeep’s engineers have crafted the Wagoneer S to include unique dimensions and powertrain configurations that align with the brand’s rugged ethos. Essential Jeep features like Selec-Terrain and standard 4WD are implemented to tackle diverse terrains with ease.
Inside, the Wagoneer S flaunts a 'best-in-class' entertainment system, offering over 45 inches of screen real estate, including a 12.3-inch center infotainment and a 10.25-inch passenger display.
As the Wagoneer S readies to hit US dealerships this fall, Jeep is already setting the stage for its next act — the Wrangler-inspired Recon EV. This Wrangler-like EV aims to further cement Jeep’s position in the electric SUV market.
Why Jeep Thinks It Can Steal from Tesla
CEO Antonio Filosa has set his sights on broadening Jeep’s customer base with its first electric offerings. “Something like 100% will be conquested,” Filosa declared regarding the Wagoneer S and Recon EVs, targeting existing drivers from brands like Tesla.
Filosa’s determination comes amidst his efforts to rejuvenate Jeep's declining sales in a competitive market. After reaching nearly 1 million sales in 2018, Jeep has faced a five-year slump, selling 642,924 vehicles in the US last year, a 6% decline from the previous year.
Yet, Filosa is optimistic that diverse powertrain options, including fully electric, range-extending electric, PHEV, and mild-hybrids, can help the brand reconnect with a broader audience.
Pricing for the Wagoneer S Launch Edition starts at $71,995. While it’s a premium figure, Jeep is confident that the cutting-edge technology and iconic design will draw not just Tesla users, but a new wave of EV adopters. The Tesla Model Y, for comparison, starts at $44,990, offering up to 320 miles of range and benefits from a $7,500 tax credit. The larger Model X starts at $77,990, but with the tax credit, it has a more competitive entry point at $70,490.
Will Jeep’s Wagoneer S be able to steal the limelight from Tesla? It’s a question car enthusiasts and market watchers are keenly debating. One thing is certain: the competition in the electric SUV space just got fiercer.
