George Russell thrilled the home crowd at Silverstone by securing pole position in a nail-biting, wet-dry qualifying session for the 2024 British Grand Prix. Russell's incredible lap time of 1m 25.819s placed him just 0.171 seconds ahead of his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, while Lando Norris secured third in his McLaren, making it an all-British top three on the grid.

For Russell, this pole position marks a significant milestone—it’s his third career pole in Formula 1 and his second for the 2024 season, following a similar high point in Canada. “What a feeling, what a feeling! At the start of this year, we couldn’t have even dreamt of being on pole here,” Russell declared, euphoric. “A one-two for Lewis and I, Lando in P3… It’s just mega. It’s down to all these fans as well, they give us so much energy, so thank you so much for that.”

Feeling the Silverstone Buzz

Russell’s emotional high was palpable as he continued, expressing how the energy from the home fans elevated his performance. “The car at the moment is feeling so, so good. It really came alive in quali. Honestly, what a joy to drive around this circuit,” he added. The Brit is keen to capitalize on this momentum, aiming for back-to-back race wins after his victory in Austria.

Yet, the competition is fierce. With Lando Norris close behind and Max Verstappen starting fourth, the battle at the front promises to be thrilling. “We’re riding this wave at the moment, absolutely buzzing, but eyes on tomorrow because we’ve got a race to win. It’s going to be tight with Lando, Max is going to be fast as well, but I’m so excited right now,” Russell acknowledged.

Tactical Teamwork

While he narrowly missed out on pole position by a razor-thin margin, Lewis Hamilton was all praises and optimistic about the team's prospects. “First off, a big, big thanks to this incredible crowd,” Hamilton said. “We’re proud to be here… Three Brits in the top three is incredible.” He also congratulated Russell for his stellar performance. “A huge congratulations to George, he did such a great job. We definitely didn’t expect to be front row this weekend, but this is huge for us, for our team.”

Hamilton credited the team's collective effort for their strong position. “The car felt fantastic out there, so everyone in the garage here, all our team who have come here [from the factories] really deserve this,” he remarked. Reflecting on his own qualifying session, Hamilton added, “It was just about getting the tyre temperatures in the right place, and sealing the deal when you had the time on-track. I think I was able to do that… I think, ultimately, there was still time left on the table, which George was able to find, but I feel really confident about the car tomorrow. I think with the [weather] conditions we have, we can work together to keep Lando behind.”

A Race to Remember

The electrifying atmosphere at Silverstone isn’t just down to the racing; it’s also the passionate British fans that lift the spirits of the drivers. Russell mentioned this energizing support multiple times, stating, “The three of us… I don’t think Silverstone could have dreamt of the three Brits in the top three. Honestly, the support, we just absolutely love it, and we can’t wait for the race tomorrow.”

As the race day looms, the rivalry amidst the British trio, coupled with the looming threat from Verstappen, sets the stage for an unforgettable race. With Mercedes showing unexpected strength and McLaren's Norris hungry for a win, the 2024 British Grand Prix promises action and drama from start to finish.
