Revealed: The Date You've All Been Waiting for – New BMW M5 Sedan Set to Debut
2025 BMW M5 Prototype" />
Excitement is reaching fever pitch at BMW, and for a good reason. This weekend at Le Mans, BMW celebrated the forthcoming 2025 M2 and the eye-catching 2025 M4 CS. However, the biggest revelation was a near-production prototype of the eagerly anticipated M5 G90, draped in special camouflage that subtly announced its debut date. In an Instagram story, BMW M’s Head of Design, Michael Scully, confirmed the grand unveiling will be on June 26.
Hotly Anticipated, Heavily Teased
This revelation comes after BMWBLOG first reported that the next-generation M5 would make its grand entrance in late June. Now, with the exact date locked in, aficionados can start the countdown. While the sedan will get the spotlight initially, it's highly probable that the wagon variant isn't far behind. We might witness the G99 long-roof model debut at the illustrious Pebble Beach event on August 15.
A Busy Year for BMW M
The introduction of the new M5 marks another milestone in an already bustling year for BMW M. We’ve been treated to the updated M2, M3, and M4, each more awe-inspiring than the last. The unveiling schedule doesn't stop there. The much-anticipated X3 M50 is also expected to break cover any day now, adding to the lineup of thrilling new releases. Following closely, we expect to see the M135 hot hatch and possibly the new M235 Gran Coupe before the year's end.
The Mighty M5's Engine: A Blend of Power and Innovation
The M5 models are always the showstoppers in BMW's lineup, and the upcoming versions will be groundbreaking for more reasons than one. The new M5 will be the latest plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in the M family. Powered by a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V8 engine dubbed the “S68,” and paired with an electric motor, the car is expected to deliver a jaw-dropping combined output of over 700 horsepower. According to M Chief Frank van Meel, the G90 variant will boast an electric-only range of 43 miles (70 kilometers), making it a versatile beast on both city streets and the open highway.
The V8 Era: Approaching Its Twilight?
With whispers about the M550i not making a return, the new M5 may very well be the sole eight-cylinder 5 Series in BMW’s lineup. It could also be the swan song for V8 in the 5 Series/M5 family, as emission regulations tighten and the industry shifts toward more sustainable powertrains. It's astonishing to consider that in a decade or so, vehicles with such large engines may become rare unicorns, forever etched in memory but fading from reality.
So, for the M5 enthusiasts and speed junkies, June 26 is a date to remember. Not only will we witness a new marvel of automotive engineering, but we'll also be ushering in a new era for BMW's iconic sports sedan.
