Max Verstappen's Shocking Struggle at Emilia-Romagna: 'We Were Severely Off Pace'
The 2024 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix will be remembered not just for the fierce on-track competition, but also for Red Bull Racing's unexpected challenges. The usually indomitable Max Verstappen openly admitted to having a tough first day, describing Friday’s practice sessions as some of his most frustrating yet.
A Challenging Start
From the get-go, Verstappen reported significant issues with his RB20. Lacking grip through Free Practice 1, he was seen careening across the grass multiple times, much to the dismay of his team and fans alike. Unfortunately, the troubles didn't dissipate in the second practice session; instead, they lingered, haunting Verstappen as he struggled to find comfort in his car.
Ultimately, Verstappen finished the session in P7, a ranking that falls far short of the reigning champion's usual expectations. He expressed his thoughts candidly, stating, “A difficult day. Just difficult to get a good balance, and just not really feeling comfortable in the car. Moving around a lot, it’s very easy to lose the car, so there are a few things that we have to look at because today was just bad, just not comfortable.”
The Silver Lining
Despite the bleak performance, Verstappen remained somewhat optimistic about the coming days. “Also the long run was really bad,” he confessed, adding, “so definitely a few things that we have to improve if we want to be competitive tomorrow.” He smiled wryly when asked if there was room for improvement, quipping, “I guess it can't be worse than what we had today! We'll look at a few things we can do better for tomorrow.”
Verstappen hinted that other teams, particularly Ferrari, may have taken strides ahead. Yet he vowed to make the necessary adjustments to regain competitive pace.
On-Track Friction
The frustrations of the day weren’t confined to Verstappen's car alone. His FP2 session saw a near incident with Lewis Hamilton, who was lingering on the approach to the hairpin. Hamilton, realizing his mistake, raised a hand in apology. Verstappen’s perspective was succinct: “It’s not the first time. You try to of course always stay calm about it, but it happened again.”
However, Verstappen was quick to clarify that this lone incident wasn't the crux of his issues. “Today we were just severely off pace, that we need to fix.”
Hamilton's Take
Hamilton didn’t shy away from owning up to his role in the brief on-track drama. “I was on a cool-down lap,” the Briton explained. “I thought I was well clear, would’ve been well clear, but all of a sudden he was right on me. Ultimately it was my mistake and I tried to apologise, but he was too frustrated.”
Looking Ahead
As Verstappen and his team spend the night analyzing data and making adjustments, fans are left pondering what could be in store for Saturday's sessions. With Ferrari showing impressive pace and Red Bull grappling with unexpected issues, the dynamic between the teams could see an intriguing shift.
The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix continues to promise action and excitement, with all eyes on how Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen will respond to their early struggles. Will they bounce back stronger, or will the weekend’s challenges prove insurmountable? Only time will tell.
