The Vision
Gordian von Schoening, Chief Technology Officer at HWA, walks us through the monumental changes made to this vehicle. The idea was to showcase HWA’s capabilities, earned from 25 years of racing and road car projects for big names like Mercedes. The new HWA EVO is more than a homage; it’s a statement.
A Chassis Like No Other
They started with an original 190E chassis. After stripping it down naked, it undergoes a meticulous rebuild. The front end is completely new, made from aluminum to vastly improve crash safety and energy absorption. This isn’t your everyday restomod; HWA even ran crash tests and simulations to ensure it met their rigorous standards.
Restructured and Reinforced
The new HWA EVO incorporates double wishbone suspension, meticulously redesigned for optimal weight distribution and a lower center of gravity. The wheelbase was extended to 50mm to accommodate slightly larger wheels: 19 inches at the front and 20 at the rear.
The chassis itself is heavily reinforced to handle the new engine’s output. Additional strengthening ensures the whole body can cope with higher torque and performance without compromising stiffness.
The Engine: A Modern Powerhouse
Under the hood lies a V6, notably more compact thanks to the removal of unnecessary auxillaries. The new six-speed manual gearbox is transaxle, moving auxiliaries to the back for better balance. The engine is speculated to be the 24-valve M276, and once you strip off the excess, it fits perfectly. The 3.5-cylinder length engine boasts a distinctive 60-degree angle for optimum placement.
This twin-turbo powerhouse not only promises 450 horsepower but also boasts enhanced efficiency and responsiveness thanks to extensive modifications including a dry sump and upgraded turbo systems.
