How Tesla’s Virtual Power Plant is Revolutionizing Community Housing in Australia
Tesla’s Revolutionary Partnership with Unity Housing

In an unprecedented move, Unity Housing, one of South Australia’s top community housing providers, has partnered with Tesla to offer their tenants access to the South Australia Virtual Power Plant (SAVPP). This initiative is set to revolutionize the lives of 1,750 community housing tenants who have received invitations to join the SAVPP.

The South Australia Virtual Power Plant, currently the largest in Australia, allows households to produce and store renewable energy using Tesla’s state-of-the-art batteries and solar panels. The excess energy generated by participating homes is fed back into the grid, ensuring not just cost savings for the users but also environmental benefits.

This collaboration is a milestone for the community housing sector, as it marks the first time the SAVPP is being extended to community housing tenants. Prior to this, the benefits of this extraordinary initiative were only available to public housing tenants.

Empowering Low to Moderate Income Tenants

Unity Housing's collaboration with Tesla aims to make the virtual power plant accessible to even low to moderate income tenants. According to Matthew Woodward, CEO of Unity Housing, this initiative could be a game-changer for Australia’s community housing sector. Tesla will install batteries and solar panels at no cost to eligible Unity Housing tenants, making it easier for them to participate in the virtual power plant.

“Unity Housing tenants will be the first in the community housing sector to share the benefits of cheaper and renewable energy at scale by participating in this scheme at a time when household budgets are under increasing pressure from rising living costs,” said Woodward.

This initiative provides zero-cost green energy infrastructure to people in need, helping manage household budgets, reduce stress, and improve health and wellbeing—all while benefiting the environment. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Significant Cost Savings for Participants

By joining the SAVPP program, homeowners can achieve substantial cost savings. Unity Housing estimates that tenants who participate in the virtual power plant can save up to AU$562 per year. Early success has already been noticed, with over 250 Unity Housing tenants registering for the SAVPP so far. More than 150 tenants have reported lower electricity bills over the past three months thanks to their participation in the virtual power plant.

Given the rising cost of living, this initiative couldn't have come at a better time. Providing no-cost, renewable energy solutions to those in the greatest need is an essential step in creating a sustainable future. These tenants are now able to lower their electricity bills significantly, making it easier to manage their overall household budget.

This revolutionary partnership between Unity Housing and Tesla sets a new standard for community housing initiatives. By making renewable energy accessible to low to moderate income tenants, Tesla and Unity Housing are paving the way for a more sustainable and equitable future.
