Tesla Just Made Home Energy Storage a Game-Changer Across Europe – Here’s How
Tesla's latest partnership with Octopus Energy is set to transform how households in the UK and Spain manage their energy needs. This collaboration focuses on deploying Tesla Powerwalls in these two European nations, integrating them with Octopus Energy's innovative Kraken distributed virtual power plant (VPP) platform.
Octopus Energy announced this groundbreaking alliance in a press release on Monday. The primary goal is to make clean energy technologies more accessible and effective for homeowners. The integration aims to maximize cost savings for consumers while helping to balance electrical grids more sustainably.
The Benefits of Kraken Integration
By connecting Powerwalls to the Kraken platform, Tesla and Octopus are enabling intelligent energy management. This collaboration allows the batteries to automatically charge during off-peak hours when grid prices are low. Conversely, the stored power can be sold back to the grid during peak usage times, providing both financial and environmental benefits.
“Two energy tech giants are coming together to get the most out of clean tech in people’s homes,” said Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Octopus Energy’s Chief Product and Marketing Officer. “Now that Powerwall is integrated into Kraken, it will pass on further savings for customers while helping to balance the grid.”
Savings and Efficiency
The Intelligent Octopus Flux tariff works similarly to Tesla's auto-bidder system. It optimizes energy use and costs, automatically adjusting to low grid prices for charging and selling power back during high-demand periods. Initial estimates suggest that this system can save households around £250 (~$318) annually, setting a new benchmark for sustainable and economical energy solutions.
“This integration of Powerwall with Octopus Energy will increase value for homeowners while maintaining an excellent product experience,” emphasized Colby Hastings, Tesla’s Director of Residential Energy. “We are excited to collaborate with Octopus as we work towards powering the grid of the future.”
A Proven Partnership
Tesla and Octopus Energy are no strangers to collaboration. In 2021, both companies teamed up to deploy Powerwalls in Germany. More recently, Octopus Energy launched its EV Concierge service in Texas in 2022, aimed at simplifying the process of discovering and leasing electric vehicles.
Global Reach and Future Prospects
With over 600,000 Powerwalls already deployed worldwide, Tesla’s commitment to renewable energy is evident. The company has also piloted several VPP programs across the globe, including a major project in San Diego and another ambitious effort in Puerto Rico. While most regions are adopting the Powerwall 2, Tesla has recently unveiled its more advanced Powerwall 3, first in the U.S., then followed by Canada earlier this year.
