With the latest 2024.14 Spring Update, Tesla is making significant strides in user convenience and autonomous driving. Two standout features in this update include the enhanced Autowiper sensitivity adjustment and improvements to the Vision-based Autopark, making it easier for Teslas to navigate smaller parking spaces.
Autowiper Sensitivity Gets a Boost
Until now, Tesla's Autowiper feature that uses the vehicle’s cameras to detect moisture on the windshield hasn’t always been perfect. However, the new update aims to improve this. As part of the 2024.14 update, Tesla allows you to adjust the sensitivity of the Autowipers manually. This tweak kicks in when you press the wiper button while the wipers are set to 'Auto.' According to Tesla’s manual, “Pressing the wiper button while the wipers are set to Auto temporarily increases the sensitivity of the wipers.”
This is a small but significant change. Tesla's focus on machine learning and neural networks benefits greatly from user input, which can help refine and perfect the Autowiper functionality. While hardware limitations still exist, this user-driven sensitivity adjustment is a step toward future improvements and a more responsive system.
Autopark Fit for Tight Spaces
Tesla's Vision-based Autopark system has also undergone refinements. Previously, this feature required very specific parameters to function, including a parking space at least 7.2 feet wide. Now, thanks to the latest update, Autopark can function in spaces as narrow as the width of the vehicle itself.
Here’s the new breakdown: the Model Y can now park in spaces as narrow as 6.3 feet (1.92 meters), the Model S and Model X in spaces of 6.5 feet (1.99 meters), and the Model 3 in spots as snug as 6 feet (1.84 meters). The Cybertruck, once it hits the streets, will also benefit from this update with a minimum required space width of 6.5 feet (1.99 meters).
This improvement, nearly a 20% reduction in required space for the Model 3, allows Tesla drivers to find parking in urban areas and tight spots much more easily, making city driving and parking significantly less stressful.
Looking Forward
As Tesla continues to refine and improve its vehicles' autonomous functions, user experience is placed at the forefront. The updates to the Autowiper and Autopark reflect a larger trend of incremental but impactful improvements that make driving a Tesla more enjoyable and less of a hassle.
