Unleash the Beast: The Classic Mercedes Ponton Meets a C63 AMG V8 Powerhouse
Imagine blending the elegant curves of a classic 1961 Mercedes Ponton with the roaring power of a C63 AMG W204's V8 engine. This is not just an idea but a reality brought to life by the ingenious minds at Xtreem Motors, a British tuning firm based in Mitcham, South London. Run by the dynamic Ivaylo Ivanov, Xtreem Motors has turned heads in the automotive world with this jaw-dropping restomod. The result? A stunning hybrid that marries vintage aesthetics with modern performance.
The Origins of a Masterpiece
The story behind this sensational build starts with two cars and a pandemic-induced project. At the peak of COVID-19 lockdowns, Ivaylo stumbled upon a 2012 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe W204, complete with a Performance Pack and red napa leather interior, for a mere £17,000 after negotiations. Almost simultaneously, he acquired a rusted 1961 Mercedes Ponton, a classic car that was begging for a second life.
With both cars in his possession and plenty of free time on his hands, Ivaylo devised a plan to merge the two, creating a unique vehicle that would defy both time and expectations.
Execution: A Symphony of Engineering
The execution of this vision was no small feat. The first step involved stripping down both vehicles. Ivaylo detached the Ponton's body from its chassis, while his team dismantled the C63 AMG, leaving only its vitals—chassis, interior, floor, engine, and electronics.
Typically, one might think of simply transplanting the C63 AMG's engine into the Ponton. However, the Ponton's antique chassis would crumble under the power of the V8 engine, especially since Ivaylo’s AMG also comes with a Performance Pack boosting its power to a breathtaking 487 PS.
Instead, Ivaylo decided to marry the Ponton's body with the C63 AMG’s chassis and interior. This complex process required an array of modifications, reinforcements, and the addition of a roll cage to ensure structural integrity. Interestingly, while the car retained the luxurious red napa leather and the ergonomic design of the C63 AMG’s interior, it forwent modern safety airbags in favor of six-point racing seatbelts.
Performance Meets Preservation
The result is nothing short of astounding. Lighter than its original C63 AMG form, yet retaining functionalities like air conditioning and multiple driving modes (Comfort, Sport, and Sport+), this restomod offers both comfort and exhilarating performance. Engaging Sport+ mode unleashes the full symphonic baritone of the 6.2 liter M156 naturally aspirated V8 engine—an audio treat punctuated by every rev.
Glistening in black paint with black multi-spoke alloy wheels and LED headlights, this automobile isn’t just a car; it’s a statement. The seamless blend of classic design with modern technology and brute strength makes it a true one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
The Priceless Appeal
While the financial outlay for the entire project might tally up to around $30,000, the uniqueness and exclusivity of this build easily inflate its worth several times over. This is not merely a car; it's a rolling piece of art that captures the eyes and imaginations of everyone lucky enough to witness it.
The idea of seeing a 1961 Mercedes Ponton, a relic from a bygone era, propelling down the street with the throaty roar of a contemporary AMG V8 engine is simply priceless. It stands as a testament to what vision, skill, and a bit of madness can achieve.
