Red Bull’s Dilemma: A Battle of Titans for the 2025 F1 Seat
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko describes Red Bull as being in a 'luxury position,' with a star-studded lineup of potential drivers for the 2025 Formula 1 season. With Sergio Perez set to join Max Verstappen once again next term, the focus now shifts to their second-string outfit, RB.
Peter Bayer, the CEO of Red Bull, has shown a preference for retaining Yuki Tsunoda. Tsunoda has proven his worth by claiming points in five races this season, making him a standout candidate. Unless Tsunoda decides to seek opportunities elsewhere, he’s likely to secure a renewal.
However, the second seat at RB is still up for grabs. Daniel Ricciardo has faced challenges keeping pace with his younger and less experienced teammates, but his overall contribution to the team remains undeniable. This brings the spotlight onto Liam Lawson, who impressed during his stint as Ricciardo’s replacement in several rounds last season.
The Road Ahead for Liam Lawson
Marko commented on Liam Lawson's potential, stating, “With Liam Lawson as reserve, we have a strong driver capable of driving for another team if he does not secure a seat with us in 2025.” The challenge ahead is determining whether Lawson deserves a more permanent spot within the team.
Helmut Marko expressed the complexity of the situation, adding that it would be beneficial for Lawson to compete in Formula 1 this year to get a clearer assessment of his potential.
Another Contender Rises: Ayumu Iwasa
In the meantime, Ayumu Iwasa has also become a name to watch closely. Competing in Super Formula and having secured fourth place in Formula 2 last year, Iwasa has captured Marko’s attention.
Iwasa’s performance in Super Formula sees him currently placed third in the championship. His prowess earned him a spot in an F1 car for FP1 at Suzuka. “In addition to Tsunoda, Iwasa is another Honda driver who is putting in good performances,” Marko noted.
Interestingly, Iwasa has a long-term contract with Red Bull, further adding to the complexity and intrigue surrounding Red Bull’s driver selection for 2025. Marko stated plainly that for Iwasa to be a serious F1 prospect, he must win the Super Formula Championship.
Isack Hadjar and the Emerging Pool of Talent
Isack Hadjar, too, has made waves in Formula 2 with two wins and another podium finish, positioning him second in the Drivers' standings. Even with multiple setbacks, Hadjar’s consistency and speed make him a viable candidate for the 2025 seat.
Frenchman Hadjar’s performance ensures he remains in the conversation, despite technical difficulties and incidents during races. According to Marko, “He’s definitely one of the fastest and most consistent guys in this year’s championship.”
Beyond F2, Red Bull's talent pool extends into Formula 3. Helmut Marko proudly mentioned the promising young talents, reflecting on past criticisms. “A few years ago, everyone doubted our junior program, but what do they have to say now?”
The Luxury Dilemma
With such a wide array of talented drivers at their disposal, Red Bull indeed finds itself in a luxurious yet complicated position. Sorting through the likes of Tsunoda, Ricciardo, Lawson, Iwasa, and Hadjar, the team must make strategic decisions to continue its dominance in Formula 1.
Only time will reveal who will rise to the occasion and secure their place in Red Bull's illustrious 2025 line-up. Until then, the motorsport world watches in anticipation as the team navigates this intriguing 'luxury problem.'
