Red Bull Racing's head honcho, Christian Horner, has laid down the gauntlet for Sergio Perez, stressing that the Mexican driver's current run of disastrous results in Formula 1 is unsustainable. The speculation about Perez's future with Red Bull has reached a fever pitch following a series of disappointing performances, including a nightmarish weekend at Silverstone.
The Silverstone Grand Prix became another nail in the coffin for Perez's campaign, as an early spin into the gravel at Copse and an ill-timed switch to Intermediates during rainfall crushed any hopes of salvaging a decent finish. Eventually, he ended up in a dismal 17th place. This performance iterates a troubling trend for Perez, who has only managed to secure 15 points over the last six races. Meanwhile, McLaren and Mercedes are rapidly closing the points gap with Red Bull.
A Stark Contrast to Verstappen's Brilliance
Max Verstappen's exceptional performances have been a saving grace for Red Bull, enabling the team to maintain a significant advantage in the standings. However, Red Bull has clarified that they need both drivers firing on all cylinders. Daniel Ricciardo has struggled to replicate his past successes since his return, and Red Bull has never been entirely sold on promoting Yuki Tsunoda. The young New Zealander has been making waves in Red Bull’s second-string team and is slated to complete a filming day in the RB20. His race performances last season showcased his potential, and this upcoming run could be a significant opportunity for him to further impress the Red Bull brass.
However, Horner has downplayed the significance of Lawson’s appearance in the championship-leading car, stating that the test run had been planned for months. “The Liam aero run has been planned for a couple of months now and for Checo, of course, he’s under pressure. That’s normal in Formula 1,” Horner explained. “And when you’re under-delivering, that pressure only mounts. He’s aware of that, he knows that and this weekend nothing has gone his way.”
