How Mercedes' Tactical Tire Move Clinched Hamilton's Historic Win From Verstappen's Clutches

At the 2023 British Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff revealed how strategic tire management and superior tire degradation were crucial in shielding Lewis Hamilton from a late surge by Max Verstappen. With the track drying, Hamilton pounced on an undercut with a well-timed switch to slick tires, blazing past McLaren’s Lando Norris to chalk up his ninth Silverstone victory.

Hamilton's decisive move was made possible by a set of Soft tires that Mercedes had prudently saved for the latter stages of the race. McLaren, opting to mimic Mercedes' strategy, saw Norris being quickly overhauled by a charging Verstappen on Hard compounds. The Dutchman’s relentless pace resulted in him closing in on Hamilton but falling short by just 1.4 seconds.

Reflecting on the race, Wolff conceded that the Soft tire was the weakest link among the three options but noted that Mercedes' hand was forced due to their pre-race simulations. Surprisingly, Verstappen’s Red Bull performed admirably on the Hard tires, contrary to Mercedes' expectations.

“We didn’t have the Medium, that was very simple for us,” Wolff said. “We didn’t believe the Hard was the right tire to go. In hindsight, probably the right order of priority would be Medium, Hard, and Soft. That’s what would have been the quickest.”

Despite concerns, Wolff praised the effectiveness of Mercedes' tire degradation (deg) compared to McLaren's, which ultimately secured Hamilton's triumph. The deft communication between the pit wall and Hamilton was key in executing the crucial pit stop on Lap 38 that paved the way for his victory.

Hamilton achieved a record ninth win at Silverstone.

“The communication with the driver today was very good, and we kept the channel open over time,” Wolff explained. “And then, among ourselves, we kept discussing the pros and cons, we were monitoring the gaps, and at a certain stage, the strategist said, we believe the crossover is now. And they were spot on. That was the perfect time to do it.”

In contrast to Hamilton's triumph, the race was bittersweet for Mercedes as George Russell’s strong performance was thwarted by a water leak issue. Starting from pole, Russell was forced to abandon his podium bid, extending his home soil podium drought.

Wolff lamented, “It’s just a shame that we didn’t have, with George, he had the pace, and letting him down, here with a water leak, it’s just not great. But I think George is going to win more races in the future.”

As the Formula 1 circus moves on to the next race, this victory not only contributes to Hamilton’s storied legacy but also showcases Mercedes' prowess in tactical decision-making under high-pressure conditions. Their ability to save and then execute the perfect tire strategy will be discussed in paddocks for races to come.
