The eagerly awaited Mercedes-Maybach SL has finally made its spy debut, more than two years after the initial teaser left us all on the edge of our seats.

The car maintains much of the bodywork of the regular Mercedes SL, but subtle tweaks hint at something special just beneath the partially camouflaged exterior.
The Evolution of the SL
The Mercedes-AMG SL entered the scene in 2021 as the sophisticated roadster counterpart to the AMG GT. Since then, it has taken on various forms, including the exotic AMG Mythos speedster. The arrival of the Maybach variant is set to elevate the SL's reputation for luxury to new heights.
The journey began with a teaser in May 2022, hinting at the opulence to come. Our curiosity was piqued by a glimpse of the front end adorned with a shiny grille, the Maybach hood emblem, and a classic Mercedes ornament. Fast-forward two years, and our spy photographers have captured the prototype in the flesh, albeit still under some camouflage, hinting at even more luxurious modifications to its exterior design.

The prototype mostly retains the bodywork from the existing SL model, but the front end remains hidden under wraps, suggesting it houses Maybach-specific updates. Spy shots point toward dual trapezoidal exhaust pipes, a clear Maybach signature. While the standard four-cylinder SLs flaunt quadruple round tailpipes, their V8-powered counterparts, including the top-of-the-line E Performance hybrid, boast similar trapezoidal tailpipes.
Expect some unique alloy wheels and additional chrome accents to differentiate this Maybach roadster from its AMG sibling. Inside the cabin, Maybach plans to spoil us with a selection of exquisite materials and unparalleled personalization options. The prototype's interior reveals red upholstery, extending the color scheme to the retractable roof.
What's Under the Hood?
The powertrain remains a mystery, but our best guess is that the Maybach SL will adopt the most potent engines from the AMG lineup. A 12-cylinder setup seems improbable, as even Bentley's rival Continental GTC Speed is transitioning to a more green V8 configuration. At the peak is the AMG S63 S E Performance PHEV, churning out 805 hp and 1,047 lb-ft of torque, which seems more than sufficient for a luxury roadster.
Anticipation Builds
While the official release date remains under wraps, the Mercedes-Maybach SL is expected to hit showrooms in 2025. Until its grand reveal, we can only rely on speculative renderings and our vivid imaginations to foresee what Maybach has in store for us.
