Mercedes-AMG C 43 Recall: What You Need to Know About the Seat Wiring Harness Issue
In a recent revelation, Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for certain units of the Mercedes-AMG C 43 due to improperly routed seat wiring harnesses. The recall impacts 18 vehicles in the United States, specifically those equipped with performance seats. While the number might seem small, it’s crucial for the affected owners to be aware given the potential safety implications.
The Models Affected
The recall affects the 2023 model year of the C 43, manufactured between March 10 and April 14, 2023. These vehicles are all produced at Mercedes' Bremen plant in Germany, the same facility responsible for the AMG SL and AMG GT. Given the precision and craftsmanship synonymous with the AMG badge, this development is quite surprising.
What's the Issue?
The heart of the problem lies in the routing of the front seat wiring harnesses. When the seatback is fully reclined, the harnesses could be damaged, potentially impairing the functionality of the airbags. This poses a considerable safety risk, increasing the likelihood of injury in the event of an accident. According to Mercedes, the root cause is a deviation in the vehicle development process.
Potential Consequences
If the wiring becomes damaged, a red warning message will alert the driver to an airbag malfunction. The affected part numbers are A2065403873 and A2065403973. Mercedes began investigating this issue in late March 2023 after receiving several end-of-line testing reports. They quickly initiated a rework campaign to correct the routing. Adjustments were made by May 2023, but additional testing was required to fully understand the repercussions of the damaged wiring.
Delay in the Recall
Although the rework process began in May 2023, the official recall was only issued in May 2024. The delay was due to extensive testing, revealing that damaged wiring could compromise the PRESAFE impulse side airbag and the thorax-pelvis side airbag. Fortunately, Mercedes-Benz AG has not received any field reports or warranty claims related to this issue.
What Should Owners Do?
Mercedes dealers are tasked with inspecting the front seat wiring harness routing and reworking them if necessary, free of charge to the affected customers. Owners will receive notifications by mail no later than July 23, 2024. In the meantime, concerned owners can visit Mercedes’ recall portal to check their vehicle’s status using the 17-character VIN.
Under the Hood
The 2023 Mercedes-AMG C 43 is a marvel of engineering, boasting a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Unlike its predecessor’s V6, this engine may not deliver the same auditory pleasure but is still highly impressive. Hand-assembled in Affalterbach, the engine delivers 402 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It’s a mild hybrid, contrasting with the more advanced plug-in hybrid system found in the C 63.
While this recall may be a minor hiccup in Mercedes’ otherwise exemplary record, it is important for the brand to maintain its commitment to safety and quality.
