Max Verstappen Considering Epic Le Mans Debut: Could He Follow Hulkenberg's Footsteps?

Max Verstappen, three-time and reigning Formula 1 world champion, has set the motorsport world abuzz by revealing he’s been approached by FIA World Endurance Championship teams to race in the Hypercar category at the legendary Le Mans. This revelation, confirmed by Verstappen in a recent interview, raises the tantalizing prospect of seeing one of F1’s brightest stars potentially tackling one of the world’s most iconic endurance races.

‘Of course, you get contacted by certain people, but it has to come at the right time and in the right way,’ Verstappen told reporters, implying that while the interest is there, conditions need to be optimal for him to commit. The Dutchman’s stance on racing at Le Mans has historically been a future endeavor, post-F1. But with these new overtures, his perspective appears to be evolving. He emphasized that a convergence of proper preparation and timing could make this ambitious feat possible during his F1 career.

‘I don’t want to rush into a decision either,’ Verstappen continued. He mentioned that the development and understanding of the new Hypercar regulations and Balance of Performance (BOP) metrics are critical. As it stands, there remains some unpredictability within the new regulations, and Verstappen prefers these factors be ironed out before making a commitment.

Although Verstappen expresses hesitance, he isn't shutting the door entirely. ‘That depends fully on the preparation, whether it can be done in a good way or not,’ he stated, hinting at the possibility of running both F1 and Le Mans campaigns in parallel. ‘You can’t run Le Mans and Formula 1 in one weekend, but if it can be combined in a good way, then I think it can be done during the F1 season,’ he added, with a nod to the complex logistics involved.

Despite this, Verstappen has voiced concerns about the BOP and driver weight regulations. ‘It’s too early for me to enter because of the new regulations as well, I think they need to sort out the BOP a little bit better between the cars,’ he pointed out. His worry revolves around the fairness of competition due to weight disparities. ‘You need to comply to an average or minimum weight. But for sure in the future, I would like to race. Yeah, it’s an incredible event.’
