JLR's Bold Bet: The Electrifying Return of the Freelander Name

In a striking move that showcases both innovation and nostalgia, JLR is resurrecting the iconic Freelander name for an entirely new range of electric cars aimed initially at the Chinese market. This announcement marks a significant step in JLR's electrification strategy and global market expansion plans.
The Chery Partnership: A Dynamic Duo
These new models will be built on architecture provided by JLR's long-standing joint venture partner, Chery. The two companies have been partnered for over a decade, a partnership that has already seen the production of popular models like the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Jaguar E-Pace. Now, they aim to bolster the Chery Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR) product lineup with bespoke electrified vehicles manufactured in the city of Changshu.
Chery brings its robust presence in the Chinese automotive market, while JLR leverages its rich heritage and design prowess. This collaborative effort promises to yield mutually beneficial prospects, paving the way for a range of models that will carry the Freelander badge but exist independently from Chery's and JLR's current offerings.
An Electrified Future
Targeted at the mainstream market, these new Freelander models will first be sold exclusively in China, with plans for global export in the future. JLR has yet to disclose specific markets or timelines for this international rollout, but the global intentions are clear. JLR CEO Adrian Mardell emphasized the strategic importance of this move, noting the significance of the Chinese electric vehicle market and the enduring appeal of the Freelander brand.
Details on the technical specifications are still sparse, but reports from Chinese media suggest that the Freelander EVs will share platforms with Chery’s premium brand, Exeed. Specifically, the M3X platform, which supports both pure-combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains, is expected to play a pivotal role. However, it's anticipated that the new Freelander models will focus exclusively on plug-in hybrid technology.
Powertrain Innovation
Chery’s latest 'Super Hybrid' PHEV drivetrain is set to be a game-changer. Combining a petrol engine with two electric motors integrated into the gearbox, this setup is touted as a world-first and promises an electric-only range of up to 99 miles, thanks to a substantial battery capacity. Another potential platform, known as E0X, is designed for battery-electric and range-extender drivetrains, featuring an 800V charging architecture and offering multiple drive options—front, rear, or all-wheel drive.
Both platforms come with a variable wheelbase, suitable for crossovers as well as lower-slung models. While JLR has not yet confirmed whether the Freelander name will be limited to SUVs, the versatility of these platforms opens up a wide array of possibilities for future models.
The Road Ahead
This strategic move reaffirms JLR's commitment to innovation and adaptability in an ever-changing automotive landscape. By integrating cutting-edge technology with a name that carries significant historical weight, JLR is positioning itself to tap into the world's largest and fastest-growing electric vehicle market. It’s a bold bet, but one that promises a very exciting future not just for the Freelander brand, but for the global electric vehicle market.
