Unveiling the Hispano Suiza Carmen Sagrera: A 1,100-HP Electric Marvel with a New 103-kWh Battery
The legendary Spanish automaker Hispano Suiza has launched the next evolution of its stunning Carmen electric hypercar, aptly named the Carmen Sagrera. Debuting just in time to celebrate Hispano Suiza's 120th anniversary, the new model pays homage to the La Sagrera district of Barcelona, a historically significant location for the brand as it was the site of their factory opened in 1911.
Legacy Meets Innovation
The original Carmen made waves when it debuted in 2019, boasting a formidable 1,000 horsepower. A year later, the Carmen Boulogne upped the ante with an increase to 1,100 horsepower. Now, the Carmen Sagrera takes another leap forward, not only maintaining the Boulogne's impressive 1,100 horsepower but also incorporating a state-of-the-art 103-kWh battery, which was developed entirely in-house by Hispano Suiza.
This new battery leverages advancements in cell density to fit within the same T-shaped space of the Carmen's carbon-fiber tub, previously occupied by an 80-kWh battery in earlier versions. Although the battery alone weighs 1,350 pounds, it promises a nearly 300-mile range on the WLTP cycle commonly used in Europe. However, it’s important to note that the range may be less when tested under the more stringent EPA standards used in the United States.
Performance Enhancements
The new Carmen Sagrera is packed with performance upgrades, starting with an enhanced cooling system specifically designed for its robust new battery. The car is now fitted with bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires, and includes an upgraded braking system that’s not just lighter, but also offers more tactile feedback, utilizing carbon-ceramic rotors for exceptional braking performance.
Enhancements in aerodynamics further elevate this hypercar's driving dynamics. A major redesign, particularly at the rear of the vehicle, introduces a divided spoiler that mirrors the wings of a stork—an emblematic feature that nods to Hispano Suiza’s logo. These aerodynamic modifications significantly boost downforce and grip, offering an unparalleled driving experience.
Unmatched Acceleration
The Carmen Sagrera’s monumental 1,100 horsepower is powered by four axial-flux motors mounted at the rear axle. Each rear wheel is driven by two motors coupled in series, allowing the hypercar to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in a lightning-fast 2.6 seconds, according to Hispano Suiza.
Exclusive Availability
As with its predecessors, the production of the Carmen Sagrera will be extremely limited. While only 14 units of the original Carmen and an additional five Boulognes were ever produced, the exact number of Sagreras remains undisclosed. Though the automaker hasn’t confirmed U.S. availability just yet, CEO Sergio Martínez Campos hinted at plans to penetrate key markets like the U.S. in 2024. Impressively, at least one Carmen Boulogne already graces American roads, acquired by mattress mogul Michael Fux in his famous Fuchsia purple hue.
