George Russell Reveals How Mercedes Plans to Dominate F1 in 2024

George Russell has expressed strong confidence that Mercedes-Benz has decoded the secret to making the 'next big leap' with their upcoming upgrades, which could potentially see them back to winning ways in the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Mercedes' grasp of the ground effect regulations has materialized with significant performance leaps that position them as serious contenders. Recent rounds have seen continuous upgrades bear fruit, translating into pole positions and podium finishes, much to the delight of their passionate fan base.
Signs of a Comeback
Russell himself was able to capitalize on this resurgence by securing a pole position and a podium finish during the Canadian Grand Prix, while Lewis Hamilton went on to lead a strong Mercedes performance with a third and fourth place result in Spain.
Despite the recent improvements, there remains a noticeable gap to the front-runners. Hamilton, for instance, finished 15 seconds adrift of McLaren's Lando Norris, who himself was only two seconds behind race-winner Max Verstappen's Red Bull.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has been forthright in claiming that the margin to the top teams is not fully indicative of their potential. However, Hamilton has stressed the pressing need for additional updates to close the performance gap.
More Updates on the Way
With Hamilton teasing the introduction of new developments, George Russell is unequivocally optimistic. He firmly believes that the team has pinpointed the specific areas that require enhancement.
When asked if their performance in Spain validated their pace shown in Montreal, Russell responded affirmatively: “Yeah, 100%. We completed the race about 20 seconds behind the leaders, which is quite considerable. But we felt like we had the fastest car last week. Of course, you can't always have the fastest car every weekend, but it feels like we're riding a wave of momentum that has turned in our favor.”
“We know exactly what needs to be done to take the next significant leap with our updates, so we're quite confident moving forward,” Russell added.

Strategic Advantage
Another aspect working in Mercedes' favor is their current standing in the Constructors’ Championship. As they trail their main rivals, this position awards them more wind tunnel testing time—an invaluable resource for fine-tuning their aerodynamics.
The Briton reiterated his faith in Mercedes' ability to unlock substantial performance gains. “We're in fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship at the moment, which gives us more wind tunnel time than our rivals. We know what needs to be done to make significant strides from here,” Russell stated.
“Everyone is excited for the rest of the season. I'm confident we'll win races this year and going into the next. Who knows what can happen. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but the pace we've shown in the last two weeks is highly encouraging,” Russell enthused.
Still Conceding to Red Bull
Even with the promising uptick in performance, Russell concedes that Red Bull, led by Max Verstappen, remains the team to beat. According to Russell, Verstappen managed his car’s pace with a level of control that exemplifies why he’s considered among the best drivers in the sport.
“I mean, Verstappen's got the fastest car, and his pace, especially in that first stint, was incredibly well managed,” Russell said. “He was probably managing a six-tenth advantage per lap in the high-speed corners. When you’ve got that sort of buffer, it allows you to manage your tires more effectively.”
“When Lando Norris caught up to him, Verstappen turned it up a notch when he needed to. He’s one of the best drivers around, and the synergy between him and Red Bull is reminiscent of the Hamilton-Mercedes era. It’s all gelling, it’s all coming together,” Russell elaborated. “We just need to keep on applying pressure every step of the way.”
As the Formula 1 season progresses, all eyes will be on Mercedes and their efforts to regain dominance. With seasoned veterans and rising stars driving the charge, the future looks incredibly promising for the Silver Arrows.
