Could Geely's Backing Secure Zhou Guanyu's Future with Alpine F1?
Zhou Guanyu has confirmed that he has the support of the Chinese automotive giant Geely, a partnership that might play a crucial role in maintaining his presence in Formula 1. The young Sauber driver, currently enlisted with the team until the season's end, faces uncertainty as the team considers alternatives like Nico Hulkenberg for its 2025 lineup. However, the significant relationship between Geely and the Renault Group, which co-owns the HORSE automotive powertrains division, could provide Zhou with the opportunity he needs.
At the recent Spanish Grand Prix, Zhou spoke to the media about Geely’s continued support for his career, not just as a Formula 1 driver but also as an ambassador for their vehicles, including those from their Zeekr brand. He commented, “I’ve been an ambassador for their cars, Zeekr is from their group, so I’m very close with them. Of course, they still have a high interest in motorsports, particularly in Formula 1. I think anything where I’m heading, they will try to help me, which is nice to have.”
Despite this promising partnership, Zhou remains realistic about his prospects, noting that no specific decisions have been made regarding his future. “But then knowing they have a good connection with Alpine, it doesn’t really make my decision about where I’m heading any clearer,” he added. This connection, while beneficial, doesn’t necessarily guarantee Zhou a seat with Alpine’s F1 team. It does, however, reflect an increasing interest from Geely in expanding its footprint within Formula 1—a potential game-changer for Zhou.
The Enstone-based Alpine team could be a logical fit for Zhou due to his past experience as a Renault Academy Driver during his time in Formula 2. This previous association might make the transition smoother, should the opportunity arise. But for now, Zhou remains in discussions, evaluating all possible options for his future. “I’m talking to all the options and trying to figure out what’s best together for my Formula 1 future,” Zhou shared. “And of course, the main priority remains, trying to stay on the grid for next season. But further details haven’t been confirmed yet.”
Zhou’s 2024 season has been challenging, with zero points and only one Q2 qualifying appearance in the first ten rounds. In an uncompetitive Sauber, he has struggled to showcase his potential. Yet, the strategic support from Geely offers a beacon of hope. Should Geely’s interest in Formula 1 deepen and if rumors around an Alpine sale materialize, Zhou could find himself well-positioned for a transfer. The convergence of these elements could indeed see him donning Alpine colors in the near future.
While Zhou’s immediate focus is on improving his performance and securing his place on the 2025 grid, the evolving relationships within the motorsport and automotive industries underscore the fluid nature of Formula 1 careers. Zhou remains optimistic yet cautious, recognizing that his future hinges on many variables. The backing of an influential player like Geely could significantly tilt the scales in his favor or open new pathways in the ever-competitive world of Formula 1.
