Transforming a Classic: Inside the Electrifying Reinvention of the Mercedes SL-Class Pagoda
In a bold fusion of past and future, U.K.-based Everrati is redefining the boundaries of automotive innovation by electrifying the iconic 1960s Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, affectionately known as the Pagoda. This conversion is not just a nod to sustainability but a statement of luxury and performance combined.
Everrati, known for its pioneering work in electric vehicle (EV) conversions, has once again made headlines with its electrified rendition of the W113-generation Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Pagoda. This model, which debuted last fall, has finally had its specifications set in stone, offering enthusiasts a glimpse into the future of classic cars.
The choice for prospective owners lies between two configurations: a standard setup equipped with a 54.4-kWh battery and a long-range 'Touring' variant boasting a 68-kWh battery. The driving range for these models is estimated at 160 and 200 miles respectively, based on the WLTP cycle. However, it's important to note that these numbers might be adjusted downward when measured by the EPA's stricter standards.
What truly sets these vehicles apart is their performance. Both configurations are powered by a 300-horsepower electric motor, paired with a single-speed transmission that channels power directly to the rear wheels. The larger battery allows the SL-Class to sprint from 0-60 mph in under seven seconds, while the standard battery option trails slightly at around eight seconds. Regardless of the choice, drivers can expect a top speed of 124 mph.
Everrati's dedication to preserving the integrity of the SL-Class is evident in their meticulous conversion process. The company utilizes existing chassis structural mounting points to house the battery and driveline, thus ensuring optimal weight distribution and vehicle dynamics. Moreover, Everrati collaborates closely with classic car experts to restore each vehicle to its former glory, both inside and out.
One of the most impressive aspects of Everrati's conversions is their reversibility. This means that purists worried about modifications to their beloved classics can rest easy knowing that the original character of the vehicle remains intact.
However, such craftsmanship and innovation come at a price. The starting cost for an Everrati-converted SL-Class is 330,000 British pounds, approximately $412,000, not including the price of the donor car. This positions the electrified Pagoda as a luxury investment, blending classic aesthetics with modern EV technology.
In an age where environmental considerations are paramount, Everrati’s work offers a fascinating glimpse into the future of classic car ownership. These conversions offer a unique solution, delivering zero-emission driving without sacrificing the style and soul that make classic cars so revered.
