Revolutionizing Sports Cars: Meet the 247bhp Callum Skye Electric Beast
The Callum Skye emerges as a bold statement in the new era of electric sports cars. Its stunning design, which the company emphasizes is “driven by its capabilities,” introduces an accent loop surrounding the door apertures. This is complemented by a horizontal body structure running throughout the car, seamlessly integrating the mountings for the two large doors, which are uniquely glazed below the waistline as well as above.
Compact Yet Striking Dimensions
Measuring 4047mm in length and 1900mm in width, the Skye’s compact footprint places it alongside famously nimble models like the Renault Clio and Dacia Sandero. However, it’s not just about size – it’s how you use it. The rugged steel spaceframe chassis ensures ample ground clearance and travel, facilitated by bespoke all-independent suspension. The lightweight composite body brings the total weight to just 1150kg, making it one of the lightest electric vehicles (EVs) on the market.
Innovative Engineering Underneath
Under the sleek exterior, most chassis components are developed in-house, but the Skye sources its battery and electric motors from a yet-to-be-named supplier. Callum’s Director of Engineering, Adam Donfrancesco, elaborated: “We’ll take motors from places we like and include that with a lot of powertrain electronics that have been created for us, including wiring looms. Anything more serious we’ll get from our trusted supply network.”
Influenced by rally cars, the Skye strives to offer an enjoyable driving experience. “It’s not just about how fast it goes down the road; it wants to have great steering feel, nice suspension feel – it wants to be like a Tarmac rally car,” Donfrancesco added. This ensures that the Skye is not only fast but also provides an unmatched driving experience, blending speed with precise handling and comfort.
Transparent Testing Approach
Before customer deliveries commence in Summer 2026, the Skye will undergo rigorous testing around the Midlands and in more extreme environments. However, unlike traditional automakers, Callum has chosen to forego the usual testing camouflage. Ian Callum explained, “OEMs camouflage the cars because they want to take them out testing, and they don't want competitors to see it. We don’t really have any competition; it’s quite a unique product. So we’re not averse to letting the world see what we’re doing. We’ll be out in the open testing it.”
Interior: Minimalism Meets Functionality
Callum's design philosophy carries over from the exterior to the interior, placing a strong emphasis on minimalism. The Skye’s interior features a stacked center console equipped with touchscreen rotary dials for heating and ventilation control, reminiscent of the Jaguar F-Type, another Callum creation. A 10-inch central touchscreen with smartphone mirroring sits atop the dashboard, adding to the modern and user-friendly vibe.
As for practicality, the Skye boasts versatile credentials. The boot is accessed via a hinged tailgate, and if more space is needed, the rear bench – adequate for children – can be removed entirely. Ian Callum stated, “We want to make the car as usable as possible. It’s not bad. It’s easier than some sports cars. We think the inside of a classic Porsche is big enough for most people to still enjoy the car. That, in some ways, has been our dimensional benchmark.”
