During Monterey Car Week, I had the privilege to speak with Jascha Straub, design manager at Bugatti's Sur Mesure customization division. Inspecting the Golden Era Chiron up close was a moving experience—an emotional journey that felt like witnessing a legendary painting come to life. Straub even demonstrated his talent by sketching on spare Chiron body panels, encapsulating what it means to create true automotive art.

Bugatti's Sur Mesure division tackles only a handful of projects each year, and the Golden Era Chiron is perhaps the most ambitious yet. Inspired by one of the world’s foremost Bugatti collectors, the car's design captures the euphoria of two significant epochs in Bugatti's legacy. According to Straub, the buyer was immediately captivated by the sketch concept among the four initial ideas presented to him, signaling the commencement of this artistic journey.

“It's a journey together with the customer. It's a collaboration between Bugatti and the customer, not merely a product we sell,” Straub said, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship. The customer was actively involved, even observing the sketching process in the design studio. This collaboration fostered mutual respect and trust, essential for the project's success.

Turning Metal into Masterpiece

While Bugatti has always been known for its intricate liveries, the Golden Era is revolutionary. Each sketch was conceived through extensive 2D mockups, enabling precise placement and proportion adjustment on the vehicle's curvaceous body. The final car features 45 unique sketches, with the driver’s side showcasing the modern era, while the passenger side celebrates the classic days.

Drawing directly on metal is a highly intricate process. Different pencils and pens were tested extensively, and even the grain from the pencil was considered integral. Straub explained, “We wanted the sketches to look as though they were done on paper.” Achieving this authenticity required multiple layers of clear coat, each meticulously sanded before the next layer of sketching could commence. This innovative process ensured optimal contrast and a flawless finish.

Each drawing you see was redone multiple times to ensure perfection. Even small errors had to be sanded away and redrawn. Designers wore gloves to avoid any interference from skin oils and other contaminants. Every step, every line, reflects the intimate blend of precision and passion.

The result is mesmerizing. From every angle, the Golden Era Chiron genuinely looks like an artist's sketchbook come to life. Five designers contributed, each adding layers of detail and depth to the overall theme. John Bugatti's historic models, like the Type 35 and the Type 57 SC Atlantic, rub shoulders with modern marvels such as the Veyron and the Chiron.

Even beyond cars, the sketches feature boats, planes, trains, and other creations by the legendary Bugatti family, making every glance at the car a voyage through time and creativity. Straub emphasized the importance of illustrating the Bugatti family’s artistic prowess across many domains, incorporating elements of sculpture and furniture that transcend mere automotive history.

The Golden Era Chiron’s interior also boasts unique details, with sketches meticulously applied on the leather doors. Each sketch was protected by a special ink coat to ensure longevity despite regular wear. The badges are plated in gold, adding an extra layer of opulence to this already regal masterpiece.
