To turn it into a more practical coupe, paradoxically countering its original open-air purpose.

Not stopping at Mercedes-AMG, Theottle set his sights on the BMW Concept Skytop next. Unveiled earlier this year at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, this nostalgic and luxurious Targa top prototype likely takes its underpinnings from the BMW M4 Convertible. Speculation abounds that if the market interest is there—specifically from about 25 dedicated BMW aficionados willing to pay a premium—this collectible could make it to production.
However, Theottle's exercise in digital manipulation wasn't about reverence for the OEM's vision. Instead, it was about curiosity and creativity. In a behind-the-scenes video, he chronicles how he ‘reversed engineered’ the Skytop into a coupe, crafting a visual sketchbook of what might be, rather than what’s intended.
A Double-Take Worthy Transformation
The finished render showcases a rear three-quarters perspective that is fascinating. Sans the iconic BMW white-blue badge, this two-door coupe transformation could easily be mistaken for any generic vehicle, possibly even one manufactured in China. The transformation begs the question: does this kill some of the Skytop’s unique identity?
BMW, on the other hand, has shown no signs of veering off their busy production plans. From the revealing of the Skytop, to the updated models set for 2024, including the refreshed 3 Series, M3, and the robust M4 GT3 Evo race car, their plate is full. Add to this the quirky new 1 Series—anchored by the 312-hp M135 xDrive flagship—and it’s clear that a production coupe version of the Skytop might not be high on their agenda.
