When you think of the BMW 1M, the image that comes to mind is a compact powerhouse with an energetic personality and stirring performance. But what if I told you that this already thrilling car just received a transformation that makes it even more exhilarating? Enter Evolve Automotive’s latest project – a BMW 1M outfitted with a V8 engine derived from none other than the BMW Z4 GT3 race car. Yes, you read that right: a road-going 1M with the heart of a track monster.

The idea of swapping engines in a performance vehicle isn’t new, but the implementation of a V8 into a BMW 1M is certainly rare and audacious. Evolve Automotive’s previously modified 1 Series M Coupe already had a thrilling ride thanks to an S65 swap. However, they’ve taken it up a notch with the new P65 engine, a remarkable piece of engineering that is the motorsport variant of the S65 and packs a formidable punch.

The P65 is the same engine found in numerous high-performance BMW race cars, with its most notable appearance being in the Z4 GT3. This forceful naturally aspirated 4.4-liter V8 engine is not just a delight to drive; it’s a masterpiece that pushes the limits of performance cars. With revs soaring up to a staggering 9,000 rpm and an output exceeding 500 horsepower, it’s the kind of thrill that racing enthusiasts dream about. The engine was sourced from Super GT racing team Studie AG, costing an impressive €90,000, but the transformation doesn't stop at merely swapping engines.

Installing the P65 wasn’t quite as simple as dropping in a new engine. Evolve Automotive meticulously documented this engine transplant, showcasing the challenges they faced in their time-lapse video. Given the performance nature of this transplant, reliability was key, and thus significant work had to be done to ensure that the V8 could perform effectively in road conditions. One crucial aspect was the cooling system. To ensure maximum performance, the BMW 1M now sports a full CSF cooling kit originally designed for the M3 E90/E92/E93, enhancing its ability to handle the increased power.

However, challenges didn’t stop there. Due to the right-hand-drive nature of the 1M, the dry sump setup associated with the P65 had to be modified. Evolve Automotive explained that the connections required for a dry sump system clashed with the space occupied by the steering rack in right-hand-drive models, complicating the installation process. To optimize performance, they repurposed many components from the previous S65 build, including the dual-clutch automatic gearbox and the exhaust manifold.

Not content with just a heart transplant, Evolve Automotive is also enhancing various components of the vehicle. They’ve implemented their own Vanos covers alongside NRW valve covers sourced from FCP Euro, elevating both performance and aesthetic appeal. As the finishing touches are being applied, the modded 1M is primed for further upgrades leading up to SEMA 2023.

Meanwhile, IND is tasked with perfecting bodywork, paint, and overall presentation to make waves at the upcoming SEMA show in Las Vegas.
