Bentley’s Time Machine: The Revival of the 1930s Speed Six Legend
In an era where modern technology continually redefines the auto industry, Bentley Mulliner has embarked on a mesmerizing journey back in time, crafting the first new Speed Six in nearly a century. A fusion of passion, history, and unparalleled expertise is set to culminate in the rebirth of a legend. This piece delves deep into the meticulous construction process of the Speed Six Continuation Series, a project that resonates with the echoes of roaring engines and timeless triumphs.
Reviving a Legend
The task was monumental: resurrecting the Bentley Speed Six, a vehicle that had not seen a new model since 1930. This undertaking was not merely about building a car; it was about bringing history to life, with only 12 bespoke examples set to grace the roads. The challenge was accepted with a blend of reverence for the original and relentless attention to detail.
Employing traditional materials and techniques, Bentley and its partners embarked on this ambitious project. Portobello Engineering was tasked with creating the chassis using period-correct methods, developing over 20 tonnes of tooling to achieve the authentic craftsmanship the project demanded. Even down to the bolts - which adhered strictly to the original specifications - the commitment to authenticity was unwavering.
Collaborative Craftsmanship
The body of the new Speed Six demanded an artisan's touch, and it found one in Lomax Coachbuilders. These skilled craftsmen carved the frame from ash wood, shaping the legacy with their hands. This was then entrusted to Mulliner, Bentley's in-house personalisation department, which wrapped the legacy in Rexine, a fabric true to the spirit of the 1930s.
Every component, from the headlights crafted by Vintage Headlamp Restoration International to the radiator and gas tank from the Vintage Car Radiator Company, was a testament to the devotion of recreating the Speed Six in its most authentic form. The result? A car that not only embodies the spirit of its era but also promises the thrilling performance that made the original a Le Mans champion - twice.
The Final Test
Before the first customer could lay hands on the new Speed Six, Bentley put the prototype, Car Zero, through its paces. With 40 hours of engine testing and over 6,214 miles of endurance trials across various terrains, the car's authenticity was matched only by its performance. Achieving a top speed of 112 mph, the Speed Six Continuation Series honored its heritage without compromising on the thrill of driving.
The 6.5-liter inline-six engine, finely tuned to produce 205 hp, is a bridge between past and present. It’s a symbol of Bentley's dedication to authenticity, ensuring that while the Speed Six might belong to a bygone era, its spirit and performance endure.
A Personal Touch
For the fortunate few who will call the Speed Six their own, Bentley offers a range of personalization options, enabling each owner to inject their personal style into these historic vehicles. Whether they choose to relive the dramatic races of yesteryears or forge new tales, the Speed Six offers a canvas for adventure.
The story of the Bentley Speed Six is one of passion, craftsmanship, and a deep reverence for automotive heritage. As these new models take to the roads, they are not just cars; they are moving monuments to a golden age of racing, a reminder of what happens when history is not just preserved, but brought vividly to life.
