Fernando Alonso Reveals Aston Martin's Astonishing Comeback Plan Amid F1 Turmoil
Fernando Alonso has opened up about Aston Martin's future in Formula 1, revealing that the team is 'more confident than in previous months' despite facing significant challenges this season. The team, which has seen its performance take a dip since the middle of last season, has found itself struggling to keep up with competitors. This was made quite apparent during a disappointing Spanish Grand Prix where Alonso finished 12th and his teammate Lance Stroll also failed to impress.
The Road So Far
Aston Martin had high hopes coming into the 2024 season, especially after rolling out updates at Imola. Unfortunately, these updates have not delivered the expected improvements. Fernando Alonso, who has managed to score points just once in the last four races, experienced a particularly tough race on home soil in Spain, exiting in Q2.
Despite these setbacks, Alonso is optimistic. He mentioned, 'We’ve been testing a few different set-ups, these long corners these cars, they all behave differently.' According to him, the team has been able to gather valuable information that will contribute to future improvements. 'I think we have a plan; let’s see if it contributes to a better result, but we are more confident than we have been in the previous months,' he added.
A Learning Curve
Alonso stressed that the team is still coming to grips with the AMR24. 'We cannot forget last year was the first car that this new technical team was designing,' he pointed out. With the car still in its developmental phase, Alonso believes that a lot of the current struggles are part of a learning curve for the team. 'We’ve been trying to add performance to the car, sometimes we didn’t add much and made the car a bit more tricky and difficult to drive,' he confessed.
Despite the current difficulties, Alonso remains upbeat. 'They’ve been working for one year and a half together, and everything is growing still at the top level, and it’s a strong position into the future,' he said. For him, the focus is on long-term success, even if the present is less than ideal. 'So I’m very relaxed, but the present is what matters in racing, and today the present is Barcelona and it’s obviously painful but I’m relaxed about the performance.'
The Tripleheader Conundrum
Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack has also weighed in on the team's current predicament. He explained how the ongoing tripleheader—five races in six weeks—is making it difficult to address the car’s performance issues, particularly in long, winding corners. 'We have had quite a lot of understanding after Monaco, Imola, and Canada,' Krack stated, 'but it’s about fixing them.'
According to Krack, the main challenge is the lack of time. 'You have no time. That’s the main problem at the moment. So we have to hang on like this, get the best out of the car each weekend and bring these parts as quickly as possible,' he added.
In summary, while the present is filled with challenges for Aston Martin, the spirit within the team remains positive. With a clear plan and better understanding of their car, both Alonso and the team are looking ahead with renewed confidence. The road to recovery may be long, but the team believes they are headed in the right direction.
