The Future of SUVs: 2027 BMW X5 G65 Spotted in First Ever Electric iX5 Avatar
We've been eagerly anticipating the next-generation BMW X5 for quite some time, and now we have our first concrete glimpse of what the future holds. The initial spy shots have surfaced, showcasing the luxury SUV in an all-electric guise. Without a visible exhaust system, it's clear that we're looking at the first-ever iX5. Despite the heavy camouflage, the distinct influence of BMW’s Neue Klasse design is unmistakable.
Sticking to Traditional Roots: ICE and EV BMW X5
BMW has affirmed that the Neue Klasse (NK)-inspired designs will impact even their conventionally powered models. While the iX5 is all about electric mobility, it's not built on the NK underpinnings. Instead, it adopts the CLAR platform, which also supports the gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid versions of the X5 G65. This strategy mirrors what BMW has done with the 5 Series and its electric counterpart, the i5.
At first glance, one might mistake this prototype for the upcoming iX3. However, a closer inspection reveals a larger and wider build. The integration of the door handles into the beltline, reminiscent of the Concept Skytop, enhances the sleek profile and likely aids in aerodynamic efficiency.
Anticipating Performance: M Performance Variant on the Horizon
Interestingly, the spy shots depict two different prototypes. Notably, one of them sports red brake calipers on the front axle, suggesting a more premium model. However, it lacks the sportier side mirror caps typically seen on M Performance models. The other test vehicle showcases impressive tire dimensions: 275/40/R22 at the front and 315/35/R22 at the rear.
This early look at the G65 suggests some advanced features, including a side camera on the front fenders, possibly for blind spot detection or semi-autonomous driving systems. While the headlight design in the prototype might change, the wide and flat housing is expected to remain consistent with the Vision Neue Klasse X.
Design Language: Influences of Neue Klasse
BMW appears to have cleverly camouflaged the front end to give the illusion of two tiny kidney grilles, one incorporating a front-facing camera. At the rear, the basic taillight clusters aren't indicative of the final design for this upscale vehicle. Behind closed doors, BMW has supposedly given dealers a sneak peek of the new G65. During a two-day event in Las Vegas earlier this year, the fifth-generation X5 was discussed, and its distinctive design elements, such as X-shaped headlights, were highlighted. Dealers described the headlights as 'the coolest thing' they'd seen, adding a 'mean' look to the vehicle.
The electric G65 isn't launching solo. Alongside the iX5, BMW is setting the stage for electric versions of the X6 (G66) and X7 (G67), dubbed iX6 and iX7, respectively. All these SUVs are expected to roll off the line in Spartanburg, South Carolina, by 2030. While the combustion engine variants will likely maintain the V8 in the US, European versions will adhere to stricter emission standards.
