The 2025 BMW M5: 717 HP Hybrid Powerhouse with a Hidden Drawback
The 2025 BMW M5 is embracing a hybrid future, packing a whopping 717 hp and melding electrified performance with the beloved V8 roar that fans adore. However, this shift towards hybrid power comes with its own set of challenges, including a notable increase in weight.
Hybrid Innovation Meets Raw Power
BMW enthusiasts have eagerly awaited the arrival of an electrified M5, and it’s finally here. While the adoption of a plug-in hybrid drivetrain boasting 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque is groundbreaking, it doesn’t come without its drawbacks. The all-new 2025 M5 takes a minor step back in raw speed, achieving 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds slower than its predecessor.
The M5 retains its muscular 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine, churning out 577 hp between 5,600 and 6,500 rpm and delivering 553 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,800 rpm. This engine, borrowed from the flagship XM super-SUV, pairs seamlessly with an electric motor, adding 194 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque to the mix.
Weight: A Necessary Evil?
With the transition to hybrid, BMW’s super sedan has experienced a significant weight gain. Sitting at an imposing 5,390 lbs, the 2025 M5 is a hefty 24% heavier than the previous model. While luxury and performance models typically gain weight over time, this increase is partly attributed to the additional hybrid components.
Despite the added bulk, BMW has made strides to ensure the vehicle remains agile. The new M5's eight-speed “M Steptronic” gearbox, combined with advanced rear-biased all-wheel drive that can switch to rear-wheel drive for dynamic driving, help maintain the sporty driving experience enthusiasts expect.
Advanced Features and Performance
One of the most notable advancements is the “Boost Control” system. By holding the left paddle shifter, drivers can activate the most aggressive settings in an instant, eliminating the need to toggle through various sport modes.
The M5's suspension has also seen significant updates. The front double-wishbone setup has been revamped with lightweight aluminum components, reducing unsprung mass. Meanwhile, the rear suspension incorporates advanced track and camber control arms to enhance handling.
Another noteworthy feature is the Active M Differential, which intelligently distributes power to individual wheels to counteract understeer and optimize cornering performance.
Design and Interior
BMW hasn't skimped on aesthetics and luxury for the 2025 M5. While the new design may not be universally hailed as 'pretty,' it certainly commands attention. The enclosed gloss black grille, wider wheel arches, and staggered wheel sizes give the M5 a distinct look. The vehicle also features 20-inch front and 21-inch rear rims clad in performance tires, along with massive brake discs for superior stopping power.
Inside, the M5 offers M Multifunction seats for a balance of long-distance comfort and on-track support. New interior lighting, a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, and a Sky Lounge Panoramic Roof enhance the cabin experience. A redesigned steering wheel now includes heating as standard.
Tech Upgrades
The M5 is equipped with BMW’s Operating System 8.5, which reduces physical buttons in favor of a sleek, curved display. This system includes a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display, both featuring M-specific graphics.
Pricing and Availability
Starting at $119,500, with an additional $1,175 for destination and handling, the 2025 M5 represents a significant investment. Set for a worldwide debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and production starting in July, the new M5 is poised to make a lasting impact on the performance sedan market.
