Unveiling the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE450 4Matic: The Last Gas-Powered Coupé Standing

At the turn of 2023, Mercedes-Benz declared a significant reduction in its lineup, trimming down its multitude of coupes and wagons. What's left for the 2024 model year? Just two quintessential coupes: the opulent six-figure AMG GT Coupe and the brand-new CLE, the latter making waves with its blend of old-school charm and modern-day innovation.
Replacing the E- and C-Class Coupes, the CLE embodies the classic essence of a Mercedes-Benz coupe while setting a course towards a contemporary, perhaps contentious, vision of luxury. Available in both four-cylinder (CLE300) and six-cylinder (CLE450) versions, this model starts at $66,800 for the six-cylinder variant, which we had the pleasure of test-driving.
Design and Personalization
Our test model came packed with over $8000 in optional features, including striking Cirrus Silver paint, 20-inch AMG wheels, and sleek black exterior trim. Cosmetic niceties aside, practical extras like the Driver Assistance Package proved invaluable for enhanced on-road safety and intuitive navigation.
To extract the full potential of the CLE’s advanced technologies, buyers might want to consider the Pinnacle Trim, costing an additional $2600. This bundle includes MBUX Entertainment Plus, which brings cutting-edge features that set the CLE apart from its predecessors.
Performance and Mechanics
Mechanically, the CLE-Class is built on the robust and time-tested MRA2 platform. The CLE450 sports a turbocharged inline-six mild-hybrid engine, paired with a sophisticated nine-speed automatic transmission. The combined powertrain, augmented by a 48V Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), pumps out 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, delivering a seamless and dynamic driving experience.
From the outside, the CLE borrows several elements from other Mercedes models. It's comparable in size to the older E-Class Coupe—larger than the now-defunct C-Class Coupe. Its design elements, such as the continuous black bar linking the taillights and the distinctive grille, echo the aesthetics of Mercedes' EQ lineup, reaffirming its hybrid DNA.
Luxurious Interior with Cutting-Edge Tech
Inside, the CLE's cabin is a symphony of organic lines, glass, and metallic textures—all reminiscent of the current C-Class. Aluminum paddle shifters and intricately designed climate control vents offer a tangible touch of luxury. But the true marvels lie in its state-of-the-art technologies.
The 12.3-inch center screen runs the third generation of Mercedes' MBUX system and supports third-party apps via the Mercedes Me Store. From Zoom to Spotify, Apple Music integrated with Dolby Atmos, and even quirky picks like Angry Birds, the CLE aims to keep you entertained and connected.
Driving Experience
Behind the wheel, the CLE exhibits a blend of sophistication and industriousness. In Comfort mode, the ride feels somewhat floaty, while the air suspension effectively softens abrupt impacts. However, for a more composed drive, Sport mode is recommended. Ergonomically, switching drive modes can be a bit fiddly, often resulting in unwanted settings changes when simply checking the current mode.
The generous satellite map on the center screen feels redundant, especially when better-utilized options exist, such as displaying track art or using the digital instrument cluster for navigation. Features like the Zero Layer home screen fail to live up to their user-friendly promises, defaulting to an unappealing map view.
Seating and Space
The front seats, adorned with headrest-level speakers, offer optimal comfort for various body types. Rear seats, while visually appealing, provide limited headroom for anyone near six feet tall. However, they do fold flat, expanding the storage capacity to an accommodating 14.8 cubic feet.
Market Positioning
With the dearth of 2+2 coupes on the market, the CLE’s most formidable competitor may be past Mercedes models like the E-Class Coupe. If your heart is set on new wheels, consider the Audi S5 Coupe, which offers a slightly cheaper and less powerful alternative. For those who can forgo rear seats, the mid-engine Corvette is an impressive contender, especially with its adaptable Magneride suspension.
Mercedes achieves a delicate balance with the CLE—staying true to its roots while embracing select innovations. Yet, it may not convert those who aren't already enthusiasts of its lineage. For those in the market for cutting-edge tech and luxurious comfort, the CLE450 4Matic remains a compelling choice.
2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE450 4Matic Summary
Highs: Subtly elegant design, commodious cargo space.
Lows: Rolls a bit too much in Comfort mode, niche tech features.
Summary: A compelling, if not groundbreaking, successor to the E-Class Coupe.
